As a California-born gal who was introduced to the Beach Boys within weeks of coming off baby formula, the surfer/mermaid/coastal aesthetic holds a special spot in my heart.

Let me set the scene: the year is 2005 and its just after 5:00am. An 18 year-old Courtney wakes up in San Clemente to get ready for her daily before-school church class that starts at 6AM. I had rear ended someone five days after I got my license when I was 16 and never had my own car again until I was engaged. Morning after morning, I watched men and women attend what looked like a more entertaining, if freezing, religious practice: surfing. The naughty nostaglia of the Mr. Zogg’s Sex Wax, the golden tans, boards jutting out of truck beds….. the visuals of my youth have surf culture written all over them. My happiest surf memory (as a woman who has tried to surf twice) was when I was walking along the beach years after high school right at golden hour and saw Scott Eastwood emerge from the sea and shirtlessly run across the beach right in front of me carrying his surfboard. He looked like this but obviously more naked.
